Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that opening up flights to Cuba was “in support of the Cuban people and in the foreign policy interests of the United States”, and that “scheduled and charter air services between the United States and Cuban airports may resume effective immediately.”

Previously, the restrictions established in 2019 and 2020 limited airlines and charter flights to Cuba from arriving at cities other than Havana.

The restrictions also limited the total number of charter flights to Cuba at 3,600 per year, which was later suspending altogether except for Havana.

As of June 1st, 2022, travelers will once again be able to travel across the island of Cuba, including international airports in Camaguey, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Cienfuegos, Manzanillo, Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba.

The USDOT has also dismissed all pending applications for private flights to Cuba.

With some commercial airlines experiencing another peak in post-pandemic travel and others dealing with employee shortages, it’s unclear how many flights to Cuba will be offered initially.
